Stanley No. 40-1/2 “Jumbo” Scrub Plane
The No. 40-1/2 is the longer, wider, heavier version of the classic scrub plane, the No. 40. If the No. 40 is a loofah for scrubbing, the 40-1/2 is an oversized pummice stone. We’re probably trying too hard with the bathing analogy. At least we can admit it.
Anyway, really nice, all-original 40-1/2 here with a heck of a lot more, and better, japanning than you usually see on a 40 or 40-1/2. Nice! The only thing we noticed amiss was that the front knob screw is in the body receiver threads more tightly than we want to (or can) mess with trying to get it free. We doubt it’s fused in there permanently. We’re just weaklings unable to fully test that theory with our meager strength. We can’t open the pickle jar without help either.
