Calling all carriage makers! Are there still people who make wooden carriages? No? Okay, well, surely people still make wooden stage coaches, right? No? Hmm. Definitely wooden buggies then? Still no? What about wooden wagons, cabriolets, chariots, broughams, phaetons, rockaways, sleighs, or sleds? None of the above? Okay, we give up.
But the Stanley 10-1/2 has far more present-day uses than its name implies, covering the gamut of tasks requiring the plane to cut right up to the corner of a 90-degree intersection where a horizontal surface meets a vertical one. Tenons, lap joints, edge rabbets, you name it. The 10-1/2 with its compact size and full-width cutter will get right into those corners, whether on a carriage or a piece of furniture.
This particular 10-1/2 is the hard-to-find Type One version with an adjustable mouth ahead of the cutter. Honestly, the adjustment is kind of useless because it doesn’t close very tight and opens far more than you need to fit a plane shaving through, unless you’re taking 1/2” thick plane shavings. We don’t know how to take a shaving that thick with a plane, but if you do, more power to you. Anyway, it seems consumer sentiment agreed the adjustment was useless because Stanley dropped it for a fixed mouth after Type One.
This 10-1/2 has completely original finishes across the board. It hasn’t been refinished or otherwise fu@%ed with in any way. That means a killer patina on the body, but also means there’s some rust and the japanning has seen some better days, flaking off a bit in spots. The body has small notches at the apex of the curve. We can’t seem to figure out what those were used for and we don’t think it came with them from the factory. The rosewood furniture shows honest use, but it’s entirely intact with no breaks or repairs. Functionally, everything works and works smoothly as it should.
If you have dreams of being a carriage maker or just take joy in planing wood out of corners, this plane is for you. If you’re more the observer type, this plane is also for you as an all-original, super-collectable plane that you can enjoy staring at on a shelf.
