Stanley Bed Rock No. 603 Bench Plane (Smoother)

$295.00
Sold

This is a super sleek and damn good-looking—dare we even say sexy—later Bedrock 603. Probably late Type 10 (1933-1942) or early Type 11 (1943) under the Kaune Bed Rock type study. Has raised tote receiver, kidney-shaped lever-cap opening, large brass depth-adjustment wheel, “MADE IN U.S.A.” bed marking, and notched-rectangle Stanley iron and lever cap. The relatively heavy casting may indicate transitional or early wartime production, potentially tipping it into Bed Rock Type 11.

Super clean, with everything working as it should. The tote and knob are out of this world nice (possibly replacements given lack of wear, but we’re thinking probably original and immaculately preserved because the shape is so right). Either way, they’re in virtually perfect condition with only some very minor production tear-out on the tip of the tote. The body sides and sole look to have been sanded to clean them up at some point, but not anytime recently because they’re showing a nice, though subtle, patina. The cutting iron looks to have been Evaporusted, leaving some shallow pitting in the top half(ish), which fortunately is far enough away from the cutting edge that it’s cosmetic only. Still a sexy-looking plane. (We can’t define what “sexy-looking plane” means because it’s one of those know-it-when-you-see-it kind of things. Look at the pictures, and we’re pretty sure you’ll agree that: whoop, there it is.

Ships to you exceedingly well-packed, and insured just in case.
