This 603 appears to us to have all-original finishes in outstandingly preserved condition. The japanning is original and somewhere in the 90+% range intact. The rosewood furniture is original Stanley and just awesome. Totally intact, with only marks of honest use. Then we come to the patina. WOW! It’s phenomenal, buttery, and consistent. No one has refinished anything about this plane as far as we can tell. The plane seems most consistent with Bed Rock Type 7, except that it has the smaller version of the brass depth adjuster knob and a Bed Rock lever cap, both of which may have been carryovers from an earlier type. Or, maybe it’s a Frankenplane. Unless we can come up with a way to produce 1.21 Gigawatts for our time-machine DeLorean, we’ll just never know. That’s just one of the many historical mysteries that keep us up at night. It could also be too much caffeine that keeps us up at night. Our sleep problems aside, this 603 is in premium condition and has been well cared for.
“Wowza plane.” Yeah, that’s a good name for this one. Or “Sparticus.” That’s a good name too. We’ll go with that.
