Stanley-Bailey No. 4 Bench Plane (Smoother) - Sweetheart
When we think about smoothing planes, we like to conceptualize the No. 4 as the older, wiser, and fatter version of the No. 3. As to older, true, the numbers have nothing to do with ages. Don’t care. Higher numbered planes are older in our world, and that’s just our own crazy to deal with. As to wiser, we really have no concrete reason to think of the 4 as wiser than the 3, except that older is generally associated with wiser. We’ll go with that. And as to fatter, well, there’s no disputing the 4’s wider. As between wider and fatter, we say "semantics." Was there any purpose, whatsoever, to that little monologue? Seems not.
This is a beautiful No. 4 with a Sweetheart cutter, all original as far as we can tell, except for the japanning. Rosewood furniture is excellent. Great-looking patina, on the subtle side. Nice.
