Okay, before we go any deeper, let’s get this out in the open so we can all talk and heal together: the front knob on this (otherwise spectacular) block plane is either a partial nub from the original or not original at all. There! Doesn’t it feel better saying it out loud and acknowledging it? It’s like group hand plane therapy. Since we’re talking about it so openly now, our guess (based on how the knob would normally look) is that the nub is the bottom of the original, mushroom-shaped knob that lost its mushroom cap at some point.
Otherwise, as mentioned, seriously spectacular and totally original Bailey Tool Co. Mode B, made circa 1872–1879, about 7⅜ inches long. Has a nicely visible original battleaxe logo/trademark on the cutter. Structurally, it seems flawless. And, of course, has that cool, almost Brutalist-style round lever cap. Or donut-style. But "donut" just didn’t sound right. Almost looks extraterrestrial. Eye of the beholder, and such. We digress.
