Bailey Tool Co. Block Plane - Defiance "Model F"
This is one sleek, visually appealing, sports-car-of-a-block-plane. Seriously, doesn’t it look like it belongs on a race track?
7½-inch, with an adjustable mouth. These were made in Woonsocket, Rhode Island, roughly 1872–1879 by Selden Bailey’s company (then unrelated to Leonard Bailey) until Stanley bought Bailey Tool Co. in 1880.
The Model F has an unusually early adjustable mouth and a distinct, almost minimalist design. This is a super clean example, with the only notable frown-face being that the japanning might have been enhanced. But that’s a might. So let’s appreciate that it looks phenomenal whether enhanced or not.
